I stood yesterday staring at a picture of Miley Cyrus and something was bothering me. (Apart from the fact that we had the same haircut at some stage in our lives - I may have been her age) We were talking about originality in pop music and art. I want to be clear that I see very little art in pop music. However, something was bothering me about the image of Miley and then I figured it out. Her image is a slightly modern take on the Madonna image in the 1990s. While Madonna was cool....Miley comes across as....desperate. The message is the same. Mind you, there is no money in marketing the virgin anymore. Remember when Britney used to be a no sex before marriage mickey mouse club brand?
The money is back where it was originally - selling women and their bodies for male profit. I do believe that Madonna was the first and the original and sold it for herself to publicly talk about women's sexuality. Now, I believe its about selling the sex and the image to men. I wonder if you sat in a meeting to talk about Rihanna's new video - how many at the table are women and how many are men?
It's boring now. Which is why I don't really care if Miley enters porn competitions or smokes weed. Boring. Seen it. It would be more interesting to see someone doing something different.
Which is why if I have to talk about or be interested in pop music, I prefer to look at what Lady Gaga is doing. I know people say she's ripping off Madonna as well but, I don't think so. I think any female artist has to be compared to another. If she's soulful - its Adele, if she's jazz or blues - Amy Winehouse, if she's Indie - Florence and the Machine.....and so on. I see less of a rip off in Lady Gaga then I do in Miley. But, she's never dull at least. One meat dress at a time.
Look an edgy blonde crop with dark eyebrows....hmmm.....
