Posted: 02 Apr 2020 02:10 AM PDT I remember the day it began as if it were yesterday. The 'mean girl' at my primary school shut me in the outside loo (an old-school cubicle with no gap top and bottom) and left me there. 40 years on and I still panic at being locked in. I can't go into an elevator unless someone else is with me, and even then, I'll always take the stairs if possible. Ordinarily minor situations, from being temporarily held in an underground tube tunnel to failing to unlock a tricky door, have sent me into a panic attack so severe I've hyperventilated and passed out. While I have adopted CBT breathing methods to lesson the panic, and for the most part, I'm unaffected, for someone like me, being locked down, even in the comfort of my own home is a challenge. As a beauty editor who writes about health and wellness for a living, I am fortunate enough to rub shoulders with some of the world's best well-being experts and, over the years, I have learned some useful methods, products and therapies to curb anxiety. From natural calming supplements to a simple self-care shower ritual, these are the five tried and tested ways I'm staying anxiety-free during lock down. 1. Limit alcoholYou'd think that curling up on the sofa with a glass of Malbec after being stuck indoors all day would calm a worried mind. But in the long run the data shows that drinking makes anxiety worse (I know, I know) so as we could be required to stay indoors for some time, I have been steering clear of alcohol until I can celebrate the end of lock-down with friends. If you suffer from a fear of confined spaces, stay hydrated with water and non sugary drinks, including alcohol, which will only rise blood sugar levels and make you feel even more on edge. You may even lose a few pounds. 2. Slow your exercise downIt is tempting to use your time indoors to download a sweaty HIIT class and burn off all those unused calories, but according to trusted fitness expert, Dalton Wong from Twenty Two Training, when you're feeling stressed or anxious, high intensity exercise is the last thing you should do. While you may feel like letting off steam, strenuous heart-pumping movements can actually raise the stress hormone, cortisol. He suggests saving fast-paced cardio for times when you're calm and relaxed and do slow considered exercises instead, such as yoga or mobility work that is slow and considered while toning your muscles. Along with my daily walks outside, I've been doing Dalton's mini-band workout at home which has given me my exercise fix without spiking my heart rate, along with mobility and yoga practices that I follow online. Try Goop. 3. Take a calming supplement and CBD dropsNatural supplements help me stay focused on work and calm my mind. I take Lamberts Omega 3 6 9 Fatty Acid Supplements for brain health and skin, along with Wild Nutrition Ashwagandha Plus, a natural anti-anxiety herb (with magnesium) athat lowers cortisol levels and has been shown to curb depression and stress, as well as Vitamin B and Vitamin D. If I'm feeling particularly claustrophobic or am having troubles sleeping, I take a few drops of Cupid's CBD Peppermint Oil, which slows panic and leaves me feeling more chilled. 4. Wake to natural lightI have been sleeping with the curtains open. This welcomes in natural daylight into the bedroom each morning and keeps me from feeling closed in. If you don't have access to much natural light, make sure to connect with nature each day for at least twenty minutes, which will help to reset. Studies have also shown that keeping greenery such as flowers or a plant by your desk will help to keep spirits up. I have an orchid plant perched in eye sight of my work station to keep me connected with nature. 5. Turn your shower into a sanctuary: mood-boosting products to calm a worried mindDuring lock-down my bathroom has become my sanctuary. With no need to rush out the door to work, I have been taking my time twice a day to refresh my skin, body and mind by switching to products with uplifting and de-stressing natural ingredients and essential oils. These are my five mood-boosting favourites of all time. Aromatherapy Associates Revive Morning Bath and Shower Oil: With grapefruit, juniper and rosemary, apply to your body before you enter the shower, then inhale the oil from your hands in the steam of the shower. A few drops in the bath is also mood boosting. Amanda Harrington Advanced Glycolic Body Scrub: Made from biodegradable castor beads, this spa-like body scrub brightens the skin on your body while moistursing with Aloe Vera and brightening your mood with it's uplifting natural scent. Bamford B Vibrant Shampoo : With peppermint, eucalyptus and rosemary, this organic shampoo is so much more than a cleanser, it will awaken your senses and put a positive spin on your day. Chanel Sublimage Essential Comfort Cleanser: The most pampering facial wash I've come across, this gel-to-oil cleanser melts off make-up and dirt and leaves skin feeling as soft as a pebble. I look forward to using it every morning and evening. A nourishing treat for your face. It's not cheap, but a little goes a long way. Neal's Yard Remedies Lavender Bath Salts: With Mineral-rich sea salt infused with relaxing organic lavender oil, this helps to encourage your mind to slow down and get you ready for sleep. Use a small scoop in the tub each evening to help you drift off to sleep with a clear mind. |
At Home Pedicure: How To DIY Your Pedi In 10 Steps - ELLE Australia Posted: 01 Apr 2020 07:15 PM PDT This season has certainly been one of upskilling in the DIY beauty department, with social distancing regulations compelling us to handle every treatment, from an easier-than-you'd-think at-home lash tint to a precarious-but-necessary DIY Brazilian wax, from our very own homes. And as our latest salon pedicure approaches its best before date, it's time to (ironically) take our feet into our own hands as well. Because though it may not be accessorised by our favourite square-toed sandals anytime soon, a glossy pedicure will still leave your feet feeling polished, even if your indoor footwear wardrobe consists only of a comfy pair of shearling slides (cosy albeit chic). And so, we at ELLE have rounded up our top pedicure pointers, bound to ensure a convincingly professional finish. Should anyone get a glimpse of your perfectly polished feet (via video chat only, of course) they might even quiz you on how you got a pro to come to your place. (Hint: You didn't; you're just that good). Step 1: PrepGet your feet pedi-ready by ridding nails of any remnants of the previous polish. Soak a cotton pad in polish remover, hold it on each nail for a few seconds to allow the lacquer to break down, then swipe away until they're all completely clear of colour. Express Nail Polish Remover by Sephora Collection, $15 at Sephora Step 2: BuffDead skin is never chic, so nix it ASAP with a foot file. Popular to contrary belief, it's actually better to buff before soaking, as dry, hard skin flakes away (nice, right?) far easier than wet, soft skin. Use gentle back and forth motions until you're happy with the silky smooth result. Stainless Steel Pedicure File, $12.69 by Manicure Step 3: SoakNow that you're actually dealing with heels that don't feel like rocks, treat feet to a soothing soak to soften skin and cuticles . If you're feeling fancy, invest in an at-home foot spa device for a relaxing mid-soak massage. Otherwise, fill a large bowl (or your bathtub) with warm water, and mix in some epsom salts. Whatever way you go, a glass of wine is highly encouraged. We'll bet your salon never offered that; advantage home. Tru-Heat Footspa by Homedics, $99 at Myer Bath Time Baby Set Of 5 Salts by Salt By Hendrix, $29.95 at Adore Beauty Step 4: ScrubThe skin on the soles of our feet is far thicker than other more delicate areas of the body, so don't be afraid to slough the rough stuff off completely. Once feet are wet, go in with a softening, smoothing scrub—just massage in circular motions for a few minutes, then wash off with warm water and towel dry. Peppermint Reviving Pumice Foot Scrub, $19 by The Body Shop Step 5: HydrateNext up: Nourishment. Hit feet with a double dose of hydration in the form of a mask and moisturiser combo. Start by slipping on a pair of softening serum-packed socks; leave on for 15 minutes. We suggest really leaning into the relaxation situation by focusing your attention on your fave show while you wait—Tiger King, anyone? Once removed, massage the remaining serum into skin—no rinsing required—then follow with a generous coating of foot cream to lock in the moisture. The Gold Mask Foot by Starskin, $23 at Sephora Heel Chemistry by The Chemistry Brand, $30 at Adore Beauty Step 6: ShapeAlright, back to nails—it's shaping time. For best results, swap clippers for a glass or crystal nail file. By filing straight across (instead of trimming with clippers that tend to round nails at the corners), you'll be able to steer clear of an uncomfortable ingrown situation. Crystal Nail File, $19.99 by Manicare Step 7: TidyOnce you're satisfied with your shape, use a cuticle pusher to neaten and push back cuticles, while also ensuring any debris or dead skin around the nail bed is removed. Stainless Steel Pushy Cuticle Pusher And Nail Cleaner by Tweezerman, $39.95 at David Jones Step 8: PrimePrep nails pre-polish using a shine-enhancing, longevity-boosting base coat or nail primer. Apply, then wait at least ten minutes to ensure the canvas is completely dry. Infinite Shine Base Coat Primer by OPI, $22.95 at David Jones Step 9: PolishFinally, the fun part. Start by separating toes (cotton balls will do the trick if you don't have a separator on hand) to avoid toes touching and disturbing your polish while you paint. Take your shade of choice (a blush-toned neutral is always both safe and chic), and transfer a bead of polish to the nail of your big toe first. We advise the three stroke trick—one down the centre, then one on either side. Follow with the remaining toes, picking up a slightly smaller amount of polish each time you move onto the next smallest nail. Toe Separators, $4 by Target Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour in Daydream by Chanel, $41 at David Jones Step 10: SealAfter about half an hour of drying time, seal the deal by locking in your colour with a top coat. Pedicure polish is renowned for its long-lasting nature, so it's got a good chance of staying put regardless, but hey, why not bless your handiwork with maximum staying power? Top Gloss Quick Dry Top Coat by Jinsoon, $29 at MECCA Step 11: GlossGive your pedi that professional aesthetic by polishing it off with a drop of cuticle oil. The glossy finish screams 'this pedicure was performed by someone completely qualified', which is really all we're aiming for, right? Wait until toenails are touch dry, apply, and then sit back and relish in a job well done. Self Love Nail Oil, $24 by Kester Black |
